Did you know that 19 different postage stamps have been released celebrating Carnatic musicians, starting with Saint Tyagaraja, whose 15 np (naya paisa) denomination special commemorative stamp was released on Jan 6th, 1961? How fascinating!
Apart from celebrating the doyens of music, these stamps are also a part of history, and if you are a philatelist, a source of a collection theme! Each stamp release also included a writeup of the musician, which gives a little bit more history and context as we celebrate Carnatic Music.
Each week, I shall be making a post of the Carnatic Postage Stamp of the week, going in chronological order of release of the stamp, and include all the interesting tidbits, like a picture of the stamp itself (of course!), the issue date, and the writeup furnished from the Information Folder issued by Indian Posts & Telegraph Department, Government of India along with the stamp release, where available. I will also include links to other sites for even more information about the artist. I hope you enjoy it!
